First Official Psalm Sing at our Church
For many years, Steven has had a vision of encouraging music in the Body of Christ. One of the ways we are trying to implement his vision for our family is by hosting our church’s very first official psalm sing.
A psalm sing is a gathering of people of all levels of musical expertise who learn to sing a psalm in four part harmony.
That’s right folks. People who tell us at the beginning of the sing, “Well, just to warn you, I can’t really sing . . .” We smile. If they need it, we hand them this article. And then, we sing. Because it really is a lot easier than you might think; even when we start with a wonderfully fun and complicated one such as Psalm 98A!
By the end of the night, just as we suspected, we have an amazing blend of pure luscious four part harmony emanating from our music room. And a bunch of people on fire for praising God through song.

Thanks so much for opening your home Loomis Family! We enjoyed learning a new way to demonstrate man’s chief end, to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Keep it up! We all look forward to when y’all do this again!

Our family learned to sing the Psalms in harmony through the Serven family CD sets. We were amazed we could do it.
Then we were invited to join a Psalm singing group that meets monthly at the home of the leader, who has his Ph.D. in scared music from Princeton. He’s teaching us a lot, and our group just completed a year of singing completely through the Psalms. Your CD’s were such a blessing and still are.
That’s wonderful that you are gathering the saints out there in California to praise our Lord in song.

I think that’s neat and would love to take part in something like that! :)

We have the CD’s and Psalter from your family but haven’t really used them much yet because of my lack of confidence. Thanks for sharing the link to the article… I’ll keep on practicing :-)

I’m sure your church family appreciated your taking the initiative to teach them this skill! And the way you described the results as “an amazing blend of pure luscious four part harmony,” I would have loved to hear the emanating. :)

We’re hoping to do a hymn-sing in June or so… but no one here has ever done anything of that sort. Do you break up into parts beforehand and everyone learns their part, or go over them in a big group, or just sing?

Rebecca has done more of these than I, but what we have done is to sing all together, and then go into separate parts of the house to work on separate parts of one or two pieces (especially helpful if there are multiple pianos, or at least a pitch pipe), and then come back together to sing them all together. Hope this helps! S
